What is the Guard?

The Army National Guard is an elite group of warriors who dedicate a portion of their time to serving their nation. Each state has its own Guard, as required by the Constitution; in fact, it is the only branch of the military whose existence is actually required by the Constitution. Take in all of our info about the National Guard and see if it appeals to you!

Noble History of the National Guard

There is a long and noble history of the National Guard serving at home and abroad to ensure the safety and freedom of their fellow citizens. They have combated natural disasters, supported regular Army troops and, when called upon, borne arms against their nation’s enemies.

Since 1636, the Guard has brought glory and honor upon itself and its soldiers through quiet and selfless service. Do you think you have what it takes to be a member of this select group?

In the Guard you become a Soldier. What does it mean to be a Soldier? It’s being a part of noble tradition of service extending back almost 400 years. It means you become a member of the best trained, best equipped, and most respected military force in history. It means you will make a difference.

Most people between the ages of 17 and 42 qualify to join the Guard, and you probably do too. However, we do have a few strict guidelines. Read on to find out whether you're in the running.

Physical Size and Fitness

You'll be tested for height, weight and physical condition. Click on the links below to see if you fit in.

  • Your Age

    If this is your first time enlisting in a U.S. military division, you must be between the ages of 17 and 42 to qualify.

    Education

    You must meet one of these three academic conditions:

  • You already have your high school diploma or GED
  • You're currently in high school, and will remain there to obtain your diploma while serving part time in the Guard
  • You will earn your GED through our GED testing program or GED Plus program
  •

    • Non Prior Service Enlistment Bonus = $20,000, $15,000 and $10,000
    • Prior Service Enlistment Bonus = $15,000
    • Extension Bonus "Current Guard Members" = $15,000 paid Lump Sum
    • Other Bonus =Additional enlistment bonuses may be available for civilian-acquired skills or for service members with prior service -acquired skills. While a person may be eligible for different bonuses, the law limits the total amount paid

    Choose Your Future -- We'll Make it a Reality

    What do you want to do for a living? Program computers? Fly? Work for the FBI?

    Whatever your dream job is, there's a corresponding career in the National Guard that will train you for it.

    When you join the Guard, you choose an MOS, or Military Occupational Specialty, from more than 200 exciting options. After Basic Training, in Advanced Individual Training (AIT), you go hands-on learning-then-doing-this job. Along with being fascinating and fun, this job acts as training ground for dozens of exciting, lucrative careers in the private sector.

    It's a tough world out there. But Guard members have advantages. We place you ahead of the pack. Employers are looking for experience and leadership, and when they see the National Guard on your resume, they know you've got it.

    MOS Specialty Areas

    Below are brief summaries of our MOS groupings.

    Combat Arms

    Train to defend our country and defeat the enemy. Learn to take and hold ground in battle. Prepares you for a career in the armed forces or Special Forces.

    Combat Support

    Jobs include information systems, communications networks, maps, area security, and law and order. Can lead to civilian jobs in communications, civil affairs and intelligence.

    Combat Service Support

    Keep all operations running efficiently. Work may be in payroll, health, personnel or other areas. Prepares you for a career in human resources.

    Military Police (MP) / Military Intelligence (MI)

    MPs keep the peace and respond to emergencies. MI gather and analyze critical information, create and break secret codes, and more. Civilian counterparts include the civilian police force, the FBI and the CIA.

    Communications

    Build, operate and service satellite dishes, microwave transmitters, fiber optics and computer networks. Corresponding private sector careers include video equipment operator and electronics.

    Medical

    Provide medical care to the injured, respond to natural disasters and humanitarian needs. Prepares you for health care jobs such as medical technician, lab specialist, nurse and physician.

    Administrative / Logistics

    This field includes Automated Logistics Specialist, public affairs, journalism and personnel administration. For almost every job in this area there is a corresponding private sector vocation.
