CAMP McCAIN, Miss. -- Soldiers of the 223rd Engineer Battalion gathered with friends, family members, and distinguished guests, Aug. 13, 2017 to say farewell to one commander and welcome another to the unit.
Lieutenant Colonel Stacy Johnson took command of the 223rd Engineer Battalion during the unit's Change of Command ceremony on the Camp McCain Training Center parade field. He replaces Lt. Col. Joy Alexander
During the ceremony, Col. Ilos Ducksworth, commander of Vicksburg's 168th Engineer Brigade, thanked Lt. Col. Alexander on the outstanding service within the 223rd and welcomed Johnson into the roll as the new unit commander.
“These two officers are two of the best officers in the Mississippi Guard and I would say probably two of the best officers in the United States Army,” said Ducksworth. “People like Colonel Johnson and Colonel Alexander make brigade commanders look good and it takes a lot for me, so they have a hard job. Colonel Johnson has big shoes to fill. Colonel Alexander did an outstanding job, so I know he is going to come in here and do a great job.”
During Lt. Col. Johnson's remarks, he thanked senior Mississippi Army National Guard members for selecting him as battalion commander among a pool of very qualified applicants. “It is a tremendous honor and enormous responsibility that you have entrusted to me, you have given me charge of our most precious assets the Soldiers of the 223rd Engineer Battalion and I will not take this responsibility lightly,” said Johnson.
Lieutenant Colonel Alexander was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her selfless service, high professional standards, and dedication to duty during the ceremony. She will continue her National Guard service with the Joint Force Headquarters in Jackson.
The 223rd Engineer Battalion is headquartered in West Point and has subordinate companies in Aberdeen, Bruce, Houston, and Calhoun City.
