COLUMBUS, Miss. -- The Mississippi University for Women and the Mississippi National Guard have partnered to offer guardsmen free tuition at MUW, beginning in the fall of 2019.
Nora Miller, president of MUW, and Maj. Gen. Janson D. Boyles, the adjutant general of Mississippi, signed a memorandum of understanding for The W Free Tuition Program in MUW's Cochran Hall - Limbert Assembly Room, May 7, 2019. The W is now the third Mississippi university to offer free college attendance for the state's citizen Soldiers and Airmen. The W is also extending this opportunity to include full-time active duty Army members.
“We are excited about this partnership and proud to support our service members through the many academic programs The W has to offer,” Miller said. “Providing a high-quality, affordable education while maintaining an outstanding reputation in the region is an institutional priority for our university.”
“Readiness is our force’s top priority and The W’s tuition program will help to attract personnel who will staff our future state and federal missions," said Maj. Gen. Boyles. "The students receiving this tuition benefit will contribute tremendously towards our preparedness and be among those ready to answer the call during state emergencies and overseas contingency operations.”
At the beginning of the year, The W earned the 2019-2020 Military Friendly® Schools Designation. Institutions that earn this achievement are recognized for their commitment to being better for veterans.
In the fall, The W was ranked No. 40 by U.S. News’ Best Colleges for Veterans in the Southern regional. Colleges that make the list, were recognized for federal initiatives that help veterans and active-duty service members pay for their degrees.
To be eligible for The W Free Tuition Program, service members must be full-time undergraduate students, in good standing with their unit and cannot be within a year of their expiration of term of service. Soldiers and Airmen can contact the MSNG Education Office at 601-313-6183 for more information.
